Newborn Onesies to 18-inch Doll Clothes

newborn onesies to 18-inch doll nightgowns by nest full of eggs
This is a super quick instant gratification project taking newborn onesies and turning them into t-shirts and nightgowns for an 18-inch doll.

Newborn onesies are sized 5 to 8 pounds. I bought all of these at a used clothing sale, at less than $1.50 each.

You can easily find used newborn onesies in terrific shape with no stains because as we all know babies don't stay 5 to 8 pounds for very long, they don't even have time to wear them very long.

 For the t-shirt:
  • Measure from the shoulders down 6.5 inches, I used a quilting ruler and a rotary cutter and cut a straight line across.

  •  For the hem, iron .5 inch from the bottom, stitch at 3/8 inch with a twin needle.

The twin needle I used was 4.0 for stretch fabric.

I was happy to make several t-shirts as the doll already has lots of reversible and elastic waist skirts, so now she's got tops to go with them :)

 For the nightgown:
  • I used the longer onesies and to maximize fabric I used a seam ripper to remove the ribbing at the hip area, then cut straight across with a rotary cutter as shown in the photo.

Everything just slips over the head, no closures to worry about.

So for about $1.50 you can make one of these with minimal effort, if you shop for 18-inch doll clothes you already know that $1.50 is a good deal.

Here's a quick round-up of what I've made for the doll so far:

So cute, I'm sorry I hadn't thought of this sooner. Thanks!
What a great idea! I picked up several of these onesies last summer at a yard sale for next to nothing, but I was thinking about seaming them in the middle to make them short enough for the Bitty Twins. However, my dd (and I) have more 18" dolls than we have nightgowns at the moment, so I think I'll do this instead. Thank you so much for sharing!!
We just made one of these. Cute, but the bottom ruffled. It looked fine, actually kind of cute, for the nightgown, but for a shirt I'd prefer the straight bottom edge. How do you keep the bottom from ruffling? Thanks!

Make sure that you don't stretch the fabric as you sew? Hope that helps...
You can also take about 24-35" of 6-7" fabric. Gather it up and attach it to the bottom to make a skirt/dress. Thanks for the onsie idea. I will try it.

Thanks for sharing Debbie, I would like to try adding a skirt to the onesie t-shirt to make it into a dress.
Brilliant! My daughter is getting an AG doll for Christmas and I've got lots of clothes to make for her so this is perfect. Off to the consignment store tomorrow to check for onesies!
Make a tank top out of the bottom snap area. Cut bottom folded part in half, and stretch slightly to make small space between 2 straps and hem to make straps that snap in the back and hem bottom to finish.
I actually use the bottom part to make boy shorts, I cut the snap part of and run a seam right across. I fold over .5 inch, hem for a casing and insert a .25 elastic around the waist. I add a little satin bow just at the front of the waistband. Another thing I do for the shirts is a "lettuce" hem...I use the same color thread as the onesie shirt and I set my machine to a zig-zag stitch. I stretch the material as I am catching just the edge of the shirt, this creates the lettuce ruffle.
