Re-engineered Dress

Re-engineered Laura Ashley dress by nest full of eggs
Repurposing, upcycling, refashioning, sustainable sewing, whatever you call it, it's one of my favorites. I have taken a woman's dress and transformed it into a girl's dress several times (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6). Today I have another one...

Re-engineered Laura Ashley dress by nest full of eggs
This a pink dress refashioned from a Laura Ashley 100% cotton bridesmaid dress (made in Great Britain) from 1989.

I wanted to stay with the sweet, soft, feminine, romantic style of the original Laura Ashley bridesmaid dress. So here is what I did.

3 fabric covered buttons added to bodice, original piping at neckline, bias tape sewn onto armholes
For the skirt I took 3 skirt panels from the original dress keeping the original hem. I added in-seam side pockets to the skirt as well as lots of pretty pleats.

All done, already worn, and a very happy customer. Now off to make an 18-inch doll dress out of some of the leftover fabric...

PS Did you watch the Great British Sewing Bee series 2 episode 8? For the alteration challenge they were asked to breathe new life into an old wedding gown, turning it into a little girl dress! Wow, what fun! They were given only 2 hours for that challenge, what a challenge that would be!

Incredible work! Your new dress is so stylish and well made!
Love this!
OMG! I made a dress exactly like that (without back folds) and in exactly the same colour back in the 80's. If I can find the photo of me wearing it, I will send it to you. Most of my wardrobe back then was Laura Ashley and if I didn't buy one of her dresses, I made a knock off.
Your repurposed dress looks fantastic. Don't you just love the weight of LA cotton fabric?

That is unbelievable! And yes, if and when you find that photo, please send me it, I'd love to see it! The Laura Ashley cotton was very nice to work with.
Absolutely stunning, Rachel!! We've got some bridesmaids' dresses of our own that could use a 'new life'.....and yeah - there are a few Laura Ashley rompers and dresses tucked away in the far reaches of our closet that could use the same!!

Oh, you really must share photos of those Laura Ashley rompers & dresses that you have tucked away!

I have had a life long love affair with Laura Ashley. For our first apartment our curtains were LA cotton floral fabric! Love this refashion, I made many dresses in 80s that were very similar to your original. I love the addition of the pleats in the refashion. I can't wait to watch the finale sewing bee. I have it saved for this weekend! Happy Easter to you and your family.

Rachel I hope you don't mind me replying to one of your commenters….
KJ, our first home was decorated with Laura Ashley fabric too. Cabbage Rose curtains were to die for!
Oh, how fun it would be to see photos of those 80s dresses that you made, do you have any to share?
Wow, you did an amazing job there! And I remember Laura Ashley dresses in the 80s. They were made of really high quality fabric. So, good on you for saving that dress and repurposing it!
Gorgeous dress!!! Better than the original!
Oh well done.
I have a beautiful Laura Ashely dress Jed bought me after Hugo was born. I can't bear to give it away. I should send you some photos, you may have some ideas on how I could re-invent it.

Yes, please share some photos of your Laura Ashley dress!
I am blown away by your talent. The original Laura Ashley dress reminds me of my youth. I love what you turned it into. I can't wait to see the doll dress.
Gorgeous work, Rachel! Love the pintucks. I love refashioning too! :)
You did a beautiful job! The tucks are perfect. As usual, flawless! I'm cutting up a wedding gown to make a first communion dress this week so your photos are very helpful!

Have fun transforming the wedding gown into a 1st communion dress, can't wait to see the result!
Wow! The dress is beautiful. I love the pintucks on the bodice!
I love the pintucks. Because it is plain and not printed it even more enhances the look of the tucks. Very pretty dress
