Call the Midwife

Oliver + S Jump Rope Dress by nest full of eggs
Boil some water and gather some clean towels, it's time to call the midwife! Last night I viewed the last episode of season 3 of 'Call the Midwife' which is a British television series set in the late 1950s in London. Have you watched the show? I look forward to the start of season 4. Being a huge fan of the show, I was inspired to sew up their midwife uniform, but in miniature version.

Let me tell you about each of the three pieces...

Light blue short sleeve A-line dress with a white peter pan collar:
Pattern: Oliver + S Jump Rope Dress (difficulty level of 3 out of 4 scissors)
Size: 6
Mods: View B with short sleeves and in-seam side pockets (pocket pattern from the Oliver + S Playtime Dress)
Fabrics: Turquoise Dot Aqua Chambray 80% cotton/20% linen from the Lisette Collection, white cotton for the collar
Notions: five 5/8 inch light blue buttons

 Red cardigan:
Pattern: Flashback skinny tee for big kids
Size: 7/8
Mods: I went one size up, made the front piece a v-neck and into a cardigan, added a folded 2 inch band all around the neck/front. This Slouchy Cardigan Tutorial was helpful.
Fabric: red knit that is 90% poly/7% rayon/3% spandex

 Gray Trench Coat:
Pattern: Oliver + S Secret Agent Trench Coat (difficulty level 2 out of 4 scissors)
Size: 6
Mods: View A without the shoulder flap, I topstitched the pocket flaps down, made the buttons button the girl way
Fabric: gray cotton twill
Notions: eight .75 inch gray buttons
Oliver + S Secret Agent Trench Coat by nest full of eggs
My favorite piece is the gray trench coat, not only is it a classic piece of clothing and practical since it's dark and will hide dirt, but the gray cotton twill was a dream to work with (I love working with cotton twill).

Since the gray coat is not very girly, I added a pretty surprise in the inside by using light pink bias tape.

As much as I love this color combination, the outfit can be broken up and each piece can be interchanged with other articles of clothing in my daughter's closet.

If you haven't watched 'Call the Midwife' yet, you really must check it out!

Flashback May

Call the Midwife by nest full of eggs
Flashback May is going on right now over at Project Run & Play. Elizabeth and LiZ asked me to come back for a day and sew a look from any theme that I wish I would have had in my season, I chose: 'Sewing through the Decades', check out the whole look here.

Happy Tuesday!

Antoinette Dress

Antoinette Dress by nest full of eggs
I have 3 dresses completed, but it has been difficult as of late to take photos and blog about them. Good news though, I have one to share today.

This Antoinette sewing pattern is simply divine… lovely bow collar, 2 pleats on the skirt in the front, teardrop pockets, piping, V-neck back. I have been wanting to sew one up since December and now one is finally made.

 Project details
Pattern: Antoinette (comes in sizes 104, 116, and 128 cm = 4, 6, and 8 years) by Nele
Size: 116 cm with 128 cm length for the skirt
Fabrics: cottons in robin's egg blue, pastel pink, light green, bodice lining in white cotton voile
Notions: 7-9 inch invisible zipper

The tutorial is in Dutch, and even though I copied and pasted all the instructions into google translate, I mostly relied on the well photographed steps.

For the interior I finished the bodice/skirt seam with bias tape and the skirt side seams with clean finish seams.

I have been having fun trying different collars lately… origami, flap… it's so hard to pick a favorite, but maybe this bow collar is my favorite.

This is a fun dress to play around with color blocking… just think about all the possible color combinations!

A pretty pastel dress... just in time for Easter.

PS If you would like the Antoinette pattern/tutorial, be sure to let me know.

Canada Geese Dress and Headband Crown

Canada Geese Dress by nest full of eggs
I did a knock-off of an Inge Van den Broeck dress.
A very Belgian style dress… the sewing pattern came from a Belgian sewing book...

 Project details
Pattern: 'Stof voor durf-het-zelvers' book (= 'Fabric for dare-it-yourselfers') Pattern 8 bodice, pleated skirt made out of a rectangular piece of fabric (17 inches by 42.5 inches), skirt is entire width of the fabric with 4 pleats in the front and 4 in the back (each pleat is about 1 inch deep)
Size: 122-128 cm
Notions: 12-14 inch invisible zipper
Fabrics:
Canada geese cotton, Kathleen Keil Hill for Timeless Treasures Fabrics
yellow pima cotton for belt which was made the same way I made the red one for the Belgian style dress
skirt lining is gold polka dots from JoAnn
bias binding for hem on skirt lining was the same yellow pima cotton that was used for the belt
Tutorials:
thread belt loops
headband crown (In place of the quilt batting I used white fleece)

The headband crown is a fun little project. It's reversible and the one I made is about 4.5 inches high and 8 inches wide. Slip it off, turn it around, put it on a different headband and you have a completely different look. I want to make more of these headband crowns in different fabrics.

Very satisfying results.

This is the fifth dress I have sewn from this book, see the first 4: Pattern 8 and Flap Collar.

PS If you are curious to see more items made from the patterns in the 'Stof voor durf-het-zelvers' book check out the 'Stof voor durf-het-zelvers' flickr group.

Men's Button Up Shirt

white peasant dress with 3 ruffles down the front
For Project Run and Play season 6 week 5 the challenge is using a men's button up shirt to create your look.

I went looking around for inspiration and to see what other people have come up with and here are some ideas I found:

back view of peasant dress made from men's button up shirt
You can find lots of ideas with how-tos in the Cut Up Couture book by Koko Yamase. Only 3 chapters in this book and one whole chapter is devoted to just men's shirt which includes 16 projects…
here are photos of quite a few of them...

...loving the details on this dress & tunic...
...and loving this skirt made out of sleeves...
Do you plan to sew along for the men's button up shirt challenge? If so, what do you plan on sewing? I'm really interested in seeing what everyone comes up with for this challenge.

Le Tricolore

Project Run and Play Season 5 has officially started. It is Week #1 and the challenge was a Pattern Remix, "It's OK to be Biased" Skirt by Katy at no big dill. Use the bias strip technique and make it your own.
Did you enjoy watching the Summer Olympics over the summer and seeing all the flags from all around the world? 'Le Tricolore' is what the French call their flag, it is where I got my inspiration from. My daughter is half French, so she is the perfect little model for this one.

I've already made a French flag skirt using Dana's layered skirt tutorial. You know, so why not create a whole outfit inspired by the French flag?
So here you have a modern, color block top & skirt, in bright eye catching colors... classy, polished, and oh so chic! The skirt is a color block white and red elastic waist skirt, the seams used for the skirt were French seams (how fitting for a French flag inspired outfit!) The royal blue top is fully lined with an invisible zipper in the back (I had to shorten the zipper from the bottom as I couldn't find an invisible zipper short enough). I decided to make the bias strips very evenly spaced apart, creating texture within each color block. And for la piece de resistance... white bias strip straps and ties in the back making a really beautiful touch in the back and a nice surprise.
I decided to make this outfit into separates instead of a dress as it will give more versatility, she can wear this skirt with a store bought white shirt, for example, that she already has in her closet. For the construction of the top I placed red & black style tapes on my child sized dress form to create the style lines in order to produce a muslin pattern first. This was the first time I've ever done this method & it was a success! I'm so pleased with the result.

I found a nice light weight fabric that would work really well with this technique. I wanted something that wouldn't weigh down each piece since there are so many layers. Also the ties in the back flow so beautifully in the breeze, don't they?
I also created a blue toile vertical ribbon cuff bracelet to accent the outfit, this was ribbon that I bought in Paris a decade ago. The ribbon just happened to be in the same royal blue that's found in the French flag, so of course I just had to use it for this challenge, it's the whole reason why I've been saving it all these 10 long years, right? On a side note if you ever have the opportunity to visit the Toile museum in a suburb of Paris, I highly recommend it.
By the way, everything is made of bias strips... even the blue fabric I used to make the toile ribbon cuff bracelet.

Fast facts
:: Technique: bias strips
:: Fashion trend: color block
:: Inspiration: the French flag
:: Fabric: silk essence from JoAnn Fabrics
:: Hairstyle: long hair messy bun
:: Photo shoot location: Minneapolis Sculpture Garden with down town Minneapolis skyline in the background. (I unfortunately couldn't get any photos of the Spoonbridge and Cherry (the symbol of Minneapolis) as there was a huge ugly orange truck next to it the whole time that we were there, it was doing work on the cherry).

Vive le bleu, blanc, et rouge !

Now go vote !

I have so many ideas I cannot wait to share with you. I think I'm most excited about Boy's Wear, which will be Week #4, I have an awesome look that I hope you will like, too, but I have to get enough votes during the first 3 weeks to be able to make it to Week #4. Although I do have to say that I'm a little scared about drafting pants, any advice on drafting pants?? Please share :)

As far as photographing my creations, I'm hoping to have the modeling photo sessions at different locations in my area, to give you a tour of where I live (Twin Cities area of Minnesota).

So I'd love to hear what are your thoughts about the themes each week? Which one are you most looking forward to? Do you plan to sew along during Season 5? If so, do you have all the updated measurements for your child(ren)?

I guess I better get started cutting bias strips.

Alright everyone, now it's time to "make it work"...

Super Duper Exciting Announcement

I'm so happy to share this news with you today:

I was invited to compete in Season 5 of Project Run & Play !!!

And I said yes.

What perfect timing... just before I was invited a child sized dress form (in above photo) arrived in the mail, a brand new tool for me to use, so I am ready to dive right in.

Season 5 will start September 10th with voting starting September 14th.

Check out the other 7 designers in the competition, should be fun, huh?

This will be a wonderful opportunity to improve my designing/pattern drafting/sewing skills. I want to push myself and learn more. I also want to have fun, try new things, and to step it up a notch. We will see what time and my ability will allow.

Can you tell I am so looking forward to this? Many thanks to Elizabeth & liZ of Simple Simon & Co for the invitation !

OK, now I'm off to finish cleaning up my sewing room, shop for fabrics, and sew, sew, sew...

I sure hope my sewing machine doesn't break anytime soon.

I'll see you on the runway!

PS Tomorrow the Season 5 challenges will be announced :)
